Earth Tones mixes environmental data collection with technology to find new ways of representing hidden elements of nature and our fragile relationship to it.

Earth Tones – Kāṇada Kathegaḷu

A new collaboration between Quicksand and Invisible Flock.

Presented at UnBox Festival 2019 as a first work in progress.

How the river is used, the life that it holds, and how it might be changing under our influence.

Quicksand and Invisible Flock took a journey together along the path of the river Kaveri from its source in the hills of Kodagu in the Western Ghats to the point where it leaves the state of Karnataka and enters Tamil Nadu. Beyond this path, the river continues to flow through Tamil Nadu before draining into the Bay of Bengal.

On this journey we explored capturing the essence of the river in its many forms. We collected water quality and composition, underwater terrain and topography, water flow readings, air quality, oxygen readings, underwater sound, 3D ambisonic recordings, colour and physical samples. We looked at how the river exists as a spiritual body, a resource and an ever evolving force.
