105+dB, the sound level at which individual voices are lost in a crowd, is a sonic artwork about identity, place, protest and participation.
Using an array of microphones positioned around the pitch and pointing at the crowd the work captures the 3D sound footprint of each 90 minute game and then recreates the unique sonic architecture in public spaces. The work re-stages the sound swells and noise of crowds, in public spaces, questioning what it means to belong as an individual and as a mass.
105+dB was originally commissioned by Arts Council England and was part of a partnership project between East Street Arts (Leeds), l’Entorse (Lille, France) and Vooruit (Ghent, Belgium) entitled Ex[s]ports, and funded by EU – Creative Europe.
