Every night, deep in the forests of North Sumatra, Siamang Gibbons sleep in special sleeping trees, choosing one of six trees for the family to return to each evening, the same six trees that they have used for generations.
The Sleeping Tree is a long form, durational, sound experience connecting audiences with the Sumatran rainforest. Designed for orchestral halls and large spaces, the work presents 5000+hours of audio across 36 channels of playback, collected during a three month-long mapping process of this rare ecosystem.
The installation highlights the unique biodiversity of this rainforest through its vast sound world, and follows the calls of one of the remaining families of Siamang, as they wake, call, roam and rest in the forest. The audio includes recordings of species such as the rare sumatran elephant, hornbills and orangutans. The recordings were used to help evidence biodiversity across the forest zones through bioacoustic analysis. The research has helped to lobby for the protection of secondary forest areas from deforestation in Aceh, Indonesia.
This work has been made alongside LEAP (Landscape, Ecology and Primatology) Bournemouth University and Leuser Conservation Forum rangers and primatologists in Sumatra working to protect the Leuser ecosystem from illegal logging and poaching.
